A team of international rescuers successfully pulled Hernan Gil, a 43-year-old night watch guard, alive from the rubble of a collapsed building in Catia La Mar, Venezuela on Thursday. This rescue occurred eight days after the region was struck by two significant earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude.
International Efforts in Rescue Operations
Rescue teams from multiple countries, including Venezuela, Chile, the United States, Portugal, Costa Rica, El Salvador, and Mexico, collaborated tirelessly for three days to locate and rescue Gil. They utilized advanced technology such as telescopic cameras to communicate with him and provided essential supplies like water and oxygen through tubes.

According to Costa Rican rescuer Minyar Collado, “When we found him, he asked us not to tell his wife that he was alive, just in case he wouldn't make it.” However, the team was determined to ensure his survival.
Survivor's Condition and Family Reaction
Gil's wife, Gusbimar Gonzalez, expressed her shock and relief upon hearing the news, stating, “I am completely surprised. It's the first time I've seen so many countries come together like this for a single cause, to save one person. This is truly a miracle.” She noted that Gil was fortunate to have survived with only minimal injuries, having hidden under a table and a chair during the collapse.
