On Saturday, Venezuelan National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez announced plans to establish temporary housing for families affected by last month's devastating earthquakes, which have resulted in a death toll of at least 4,490. The announcement comes amidst estimates from the United Nations indicating that approximately 50,000 people are still missing.
Venezuela's Earthquake Response Efforts
Following the earthquakes that struck the capital, Caracas, and the coastal state of La Guaira on June 24, over 850 buildings have been destroyed or severely damaged. More than 19,000 individuals are currently living in makeshift camps set up in various locations, including sports stadiums and schools.
As schools will need to be vacated for the upcoming academic year in September, the government estimates that around 25,000 homes will be necessary to accommodate those displaced. Rodriguez stated that the government has allocated more than 40 plots of land in La Guaira, covering approximately 584,000 square meters, for the construction of new homes.
Concerns Over Reconstruction Costs
Rodriguez expressed concerns regarding the rising costs associated with reconstruction efforts. He emphasized the need for financial resources, stating, “Costs will spiral, given the need for reconstruction, as well as for rental assistance and property purchase loans.”
