Rescue Operations Intensify in Venezuela
In the wake of devastating earthquakes that struck Venezuela's northern coastline, rescue teams are mobilizing to search for survivors amid growing concerns that the death toll could rise significantly. With initial reports indicating at least 235 fatalities, officials are bracing for the possibility that thousands more may be lost.
Destruction and Casualties
The earthquakes, measured at magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, struck within a mere 40 seconds of each other on Wednesday afternoon, wreaking havoc across the region. Numerous buildings have been reduced to rubble, and the scale of destruction is staggering. Current estimates indicate that over 4,300 individuals have sustained injuries as rescue missions are ongoing.
International Aid and Support
Countries around the world, including the United States, are rallying to provide assistance. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that the Department of Defense is preparing to aid in the deployment of search and rescue teams to the impacted areas. This coordinated response comes as the Simón Bolívar International Airport, a crucial access point near Caracas, suffered significant damage, complicating relief efforts.
