The United States Men's National Team (USMNT) confirmed on Saturday that they cannot appeal the red card issued to Folarin Balogun during their round-of-32 victory against Bosnia-Herzegovina. FIFA has stated that Balogun will miss the crucial World Cup round-of-16 match against Belgium due to this decision.
Understanding Balogun's Suspension
FIFA's ruling means that Balogun, who is the USMNT's top scorer in the tournament with three goals, will be sidelined as the team aims for a place in the quarterfinals. The red card, issued by referee Raphael Claus in the 64th minute following a VAR review, arose from a challenge on Bosnia's Tarik Muharemovic.
The US Soccer spokesperson has indicated that they would consider appealing any suspension that exceeds the automatic one-match ban typically associated with World Cup red cards. However, FIFA's disciplinary code, specifically Article 66.4, states that there is no appeal process for red cards during the tournament.
FIFA's Disciplinary Code and Its Implications
The FIFA disciplinary code outlines the consequences of red cards, automatically suspending a player for the next match. In Balogun's case, his challenge was deemed a serious foul, which led to the immediate suspension. FIFA sources have emphasized that the VAR review serves as the first line of appeal for any incident during the match.
