Explosions were reported in various parts of Iran on July 9, 2026, as military officials in the United States denied involvement in any recent attacks. According to semi-official state media, blasts were heard near Bushehr, which houses one of Iran's nuclear plants, and in the nearby city of Choghadak. Additionally, three explosions were reported in Konarak.
The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed to Al Jazeera that no US military strikes had occurred in Iran in the hours leading up to the explosions. This incident comes amid ongoing tensions between the US and Iran, which have escalated since July 5, when Tehran launched attacks on military sites across the Gulf.
Details of the Explosions in Iran
Reports from the Mehr News Agency indicated that the explosions caused concern among local residents, although details regarding the cause, damage, or casualties were not immediately available. The agency also refuted an earlier claim of an explosion in Bandar Abbas.
In a statement to state media outlet IRNA, Ehsan Jahanian, Bushehr's deputy governor for political and security affairs, attributed the blast in Bushehr to air defense systems. He also mentioned that a military headquarters on the city's outskirts was struck by what he termed a projectile.
Regional Tensions and Responses
The recent explosions coincided with a phone call between Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump, during which they discussed continued coordination between their nations. Netanyahu emphasized that the conflict with Iran is ongoing, stating, “The [Iran] war has not ended. There are new challenges.”
