On Wednesday, July 2, 2026, indirect technical talks between the United States and Iran concluded in Doha with no significant progress towards a lasting peace agreement. The discussions, mediated by Qatari officials, followed a series of military confrontations related to shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz.
Participants in the Doha Talks
The talks featured key figures including Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, US special envoy Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner, former President Trump's son-in-law. Iran was represented by Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi, while top negotiators such as Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf did not attend the discussions.
Despite the absence of major breakthroughs, Gharibabadi confirmed that two meetings took place. The initial session focused on the US's alleged “violations of its obligations,” and the second meeting discussed the release of $6 billion in frozen Iranian funds.
Key Issues on the Agenda
During the talks, discussions were held regarding the Strait of Hormuz, Iran's nuclear program, and the ongoing conflict in Lebanon. US Vice President JD Vance indicated that the situation in the strait, crucial for global oil shipments, was a primary concern. Shipping data revealed a more than 50 percent increase in commercial traffic through the strait during the week of June 22–28 compared to the previous week.
