The US government has compensated victims of the mysterious Havana Syndrome with nearly $3 million (£2.2 million) in payments. This announcement was made on July 11, 2026, marking the first compensation for US agency staff affected by this neurological condition that has puzzled officials since its emergence.
Understanding Havana Syndrome and Its Symptoms
Havana Syndrome was first reported in 2016 when US diplomats in Cuba began experiencing strange symptoms, including hearing unusual sounds and suffering from severe dizziness and nausea. Reports of similar health incidents have since surfaced globally, affecting US personnel in countries like China.
Individuals affected by the syndrome have described symptoms such as:
- Low-frequency sounds
- Intense pressure on the skull
- Dizziness
- Nausea
Government Actions and Speculations
According to the US Department of Defence, the compensation was paid under the Havana Act, enacted in 2021. The department emphasized its commitment to prioritizing the care of those affected. Despite ongoing speculation regarding the cause of Havana Syndrome, which some attribute to microwave attacks or foreign sonic weapons, a majority of US intelligence agencies concluded that it was unlikely a foreign actor employed a novel weapon.
