On July 14, 2026, many cities across the U.S. are facing unprecedented overnight temperatures due to an intense heat wave. The National Weather Service predicts that more than 90 temperature records will be tied or broken this week, primarily during nighttime hours.
Record Heat Across the Nation
This week, cities like Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and Tampa in Florida, as well as Galveston in Texas and Charleston, South Carolina, are expected to experience nighttime lows that do not fall below 80°F (27°C). In the Midwest and Northeast, areas known for their cold winters, such as Fargo, International Falls, and Portland, will see nighttime temperatures above 70°F (21°C).
The prolonged heat wave is attributed to a persistent heat dome that is affecting vast regions of the country, resulting in dangerous conditions for residents.
The Health Risks of High Overnight Temperatures
Health experts warn that elevated nighttime temperatures can be particularly hazardous. According to Marshall Shepherd, a meteorology professor at the University of Georgia, "high overnight temperatures are dangerous because there's no time for the body's core temperature to cool down and recover from daytime heat." This can lead to severe health complications, especially for vulnerable populations.
