A UN human rights group is urging the immediate release of Palestinian doctor Hussam Abu Safia, who is currently facing imminent danger while being held in Israeli detention. The call comes after the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention determined that Israel's actions violate several articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
UN's Concerns Over Abu Safia's Health
In a statement released on July 6, 2026, the UN rights organization expressed serious concerns about Abu Safia's deteriorating health condition. His lawyer, Nasser Odeh, reported that the doctor has been subjected to brutal abuse on a daily basis, raising alarms about his well-being. Rights groups and family members have indicated that he shows signs of having been regularly tortured.
“The appropriate remedy would be to release [him] immediately and accord him an enforceable right to compensation and other reparations, in accordance with international law,” the UN body stated. This case reflects broader issues of arbitrary detention practices within Israel.
Background on Hussam Abu Safia's Detention
Dr. Hussam Abu Safia, who was the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in Gaza, was detained by Israeli authorities in December 2024 while caring for patients. He has been held without charge since then, along with other medical staff and patients. His detention has drawn widespread criticism from various human rights organizations and the medical community.
