Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated on Thursday that technical details still need to be finalized with the United States before Ukraine can begin manufacturing its own Patriot air-defence missiles. This announcement comes as Ukraine faces increasing challenges from Russian ballistic missile attacks.
Urgent Need for Patriot Missiles
Ukraine's stockpiles of interceptor missiles have been significantly depleted due to ongoing Russian strikes, which have intensified recently. Zelensky emphasized the importance of the Patriot missile system, the only weapon capable of effectively defending Ukrainian cities against such threats. “Our teams must agree on all the remaining technical aspects,” he noted in a WhatsApp briefing.
The discussions with the US were prompted by a recent meeting between Zelensky and former President Donald Trump, who indicated a willingness to allow Ukraine to manufacture these crucial missiles. However, the timeline and specifics of the agreement remain unclear.
Production Timeline and Challenges
Experts suggest that the production cycle for a Patriot missile could take approximately two years, making immediate relief from Ukraine's missile shortage unlikely. Serhii Beskrestnov, an adviser to Ukraine’s defense minister, highlighted that establishing domestic production will take many months, emphasizing that the primary obstacle is time rather than technical capability.
