On Friday, at least four people were killed and ten others injured in a series of overnight attacks by Russia on Ukraine. The strikes targeted the capital, Kyiv, and the Sumy region, resulting in casualties from drone and missile strikes. The attacks coincide with a day of mourning in Kyiv following a previous wave of strikes that killed at least 30 individuals.
Details of the Russian Attacks
In the Sumy region, two women, an elderly man, and a girl under the age of 2 were killed when a Russian drone struck a residential house. Additionally, seven people sustained injuries from a missile strike in Kryvyi Rih, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's hometown. The head of Kyiv's military administration, Tymur Tkachenko, reported that the recent attacks were the deadliest on the capital this year.
Rescue efforts are ongoing, and Tkachenko indicated that the number of casualties may increase as assessments continue. Approximately 130 buildings were damaged in the assault on Kyiv, which Mayor Vitali Klitschko characterized as the “enemy's most massive attack on the capital.”
Impact on Humanitarian Efforts
The Ukrainian Red Cross reported significant damage to its humanitarian warehouse due to the attacks, with around 320,000 relief items destroyed. This destruction is expected to hinder emergency response and humanitarian operations across Ukraine. The organization emphasized the critical need for support in light of these developments.
