The UK has become a "wild west" for the sale of experimental peptides and steroids, according to Prof Channa Jayasena from Imperial College London. Jayasena warns that the unregulated online market poses serious health risks, potentially leading to fatalities as these substances become more normalized in society.
Growing Concerns Over Experimental Peptides
Prof Jayasena, a consultant in reproductive endocrinology, has noted an increasing number of patients using experimental peptides. He emphasized that these substances, often marketed as wellness products, lack proper regulation and quality control. Many peptides are produced in China, raising concerns about contamination and safety.
“It feels that we’re in the wild west and it feels like we’ve rapidly arrived in a situation of lawlessness,” Jayasena stated. “People are buying this stuff and injecting it into their veins. This is atrocious, and this could lead to deaths.”
Link Between Social Media and Steroid Use
The rise of fitness influencers on platforms like Telegram has contributed to the normalization of steroid use among various demographics. Susan Backhouse, a sports psychology professor, highlighted that both men and women are increasingly dissatisfied with their body image, leading to a surge in enhancement practices. This normalization is exacerbated by constant exposure to before-and-after images on social media.
