The UK government is launching a 12-week consultation on plans to reduce the appeal of vapes to children and young people. Announced on July 10, 2026, the initiative aims to eliminate colorful packaging and enticing flavor names that attract minors. Health Secretary James Murray emphasized the need to act against the growing trend of youth vaping.
New Regulations on Vaping Packaging
Under the proposed regulations, vape packaging would be standardized to feature plain designs with limited branding. Flavor descriptions would be restricted to simple terms such as “apple” or “cola”. This change is part of a broader effort to make vaping less appealing to children, who are increasingly experimenting with these products.
Murray stated,
“The evidence is clear: there are too many young people experimenting with vapes, attracted by the array of flavors, bright colors, and marketing displays.”The government aims to create a safer environment for children while allowing adults to access vaping products that may aid in quitting smoking.
Consultation Following Tobacco and Vapes Act
This consultation follows the recent passing of the Tobacco and Vapes Act, which aims to create the UK’s first smoke-free generation. This legislation prohibits the sale of tobacco to anyone born after January 1, 2009, and includes provisions to ban vaping in cars with children, playgrounds, and outside schools.
