UK children are set to become one of the unhealthiest generations in decades, according to a report released by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH). This alarming conclusion comes from an analysis of 12 critical indicators of child health, revealing significant declines in vaccination rates, rising obesity, and worsening mental health issues.
Decline in Child Health Outcomes
The report highlights that child health outcomes in the UK have stagnated or worsened across all measured metrics, a trend that is particularly concerning when compared to other Western European countries. For instance, only 84% of children in the UK receive two doses of the MMR vaccine by age five, falling short of the World Health Organization's target of 95%.
Moreover, the UK has one of the highest asthma-related mortality rates in Europe, which is exacerbated by increasing hospital admissions for asthma and mental health disorders. The report indicates that infant mortality rates have shown little improvement since 2023, remaining higher than in many other European nations.
Health Inequalities Among Children
Significant health inequalities persist across the UK, with children from the most deprived areas suffering disproportionately. The rates of both infant mortality and obesity are reported to be more than twice as high in these areas compared to their more affluent counterparts. Dr. Helen Stewart, RCPCH officer for health improvement, stated, "The UK’s record on children’s health should be a national embarrassment."
