The UK is experiencing a hidden crisis in adult social care as council-run day centres, including Wellington House in Brighton, face potential closure. On Friday, Brighton and Hove city council proposed shutting down this vital facility, which serves adults with complex needs, aiming to save £400,000 annually.
Impact of Day Centre Closures
Wellington House, affectionately known as Welly, is the last council-run day centre in Brighton, catering to individuals with autism and learning disabilities. It provides a supportive environment for 21 regular attendees, with some having visited for decades. The closure of such facilities not only affects the service users but also their families who rely on these centres for respite.
According to the council, the closure is justified by the need to meet individual needs through services in the independent sector. However, this raises concerns about the adequacy and accessibility of alternative provisions.
