Typhoon Bavi has wreaked havoc across Asia, causing 17 fatalities in the Philippines while significantly disrupting life in Taiwan, Japan, and China. The storm made landfall in China's Zhejiang province late Saturday, prompting mass evacuations as authorities braced for its impact.
Impact of Typhoon Bavi in the Philippines
The typhoon, which originated as a "super typhoon" over the US Pacific territories, has left a devastating mark in the Philippines. Reports indicate that at least 17 people have died due to floods and landslides, particularly in the southern island of Mindanao. Among the casualties, ten individuals lost their lives in a landslide in Malapatan, Sarangani province, while two drowned in Bukidnon and five others perished in Lanao del Sur.
Furthermore, over 500,000 people have been affected, with more than 11,000 displaced from their homes. The Philippine meteorological agency has noted that the storm has triggered severe flooding and landslides across various regions.
Disruption in Taiwan
In Taiwan, Typhoon Bavi has prompted the evacuation of over 10,000 residents at risk from landslides, with more than 150,000 households left without power. The typhoon brought winds exceeding 100 kph and rainfall surpassing a meter, leading to extensive damage in the capital, Taipei. Authorities canceled more than 1,100 domestic and international flights, and schools and offices were closed for two days.
