President Donald Trump launched a bold initiative to redesign every government website, but the effort is encountering numerous obstacles. Established by executive order in August 2022, the National Design Studio (NDS) aims to modernize the US Web Design System (USWDS) and revamp 27,000 dot-gov websites within three years.
Challenges Faced by the National Design Studio
The NDS was created to implement the “America by Design” initiative, which intended to enhance the usability and aesthetics of government websites. However, this ambitious project is hampered by a limited workforce and a tight deadline. The NDS has been assigned a monumental task, which is made more difficult by significant budget cuts to agencies that previously focused on improving government websites.
These cuts included dismantling the 18F technology unit and restructuring the US Digital Service. As a result, the NDS operates with fewer resources, raising concerns about its ability to meet the initiative’s goals.
