Torstein Træen claimed the yellow jersey on Tuesday after Mads Pedersen secured victory in stage four of the Tour de France, held under extreme temperatures exceeding 40°C. The race covered 181 kilometers through the Aude and Ariège regions, where emergency measures were introduced to ensure rider safety amid the heatwave.
Træen's Remarkable Journey
Træen, a cancer survivor diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2022, has shown remarkable resilience. After undergoing surgery and returning to racing, he expressed gratitude for his performance at the Tour, stating, “Most of all I am grateful to perform at the Tour. It’s a pleasure to be here.” He now leads the race with an eight-minute advantage over four-time champion Tadej Pogacar.
Following his diagnosis, Træen underwent immediate treatment after a doping control revealed abnormalities. His comeback to the sport has inspired many, especially as he competes at such a high level. “I got 99 problems, but cancer ain’t one of them (any more),” he posted after his surgery.
Emergency Measures for Extreme Heat
The UCI and Tour organizers implemented emergency measures to address the heat, including additional water bottles and more drinks motorbikes than usual. Pedersen noted, “When we go to France or Spain we all know it’s going to be hot and we have a good cooling protocol.” Such measures are essential as riders face extreme conditions during the race.
