On Tuesday, three oil tankers were struck by projectiles in the Strait of Hormuz, according to the British military. This marks a significant escalation in attacks targeting commercial shipping in this critical waterway, which connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman. One tanker, reportedly carrying liquefied natural gas, caught fire off the coast of Oman.
Details of the Attacks on Tankers
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center reported that the first tanker was hit near Limah, Oman, while attempting to navigate southward out of the strait. The agency indicated that the projectile impacted the port side of the vessel. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries among the crew, but the attacks raise concerns about the safety of maritime traffic in the region.
In addition to the LNG tanker, two other vessels were struck, one of which was reportedly hit by a drone. The extent of the damage to these vessels is still under assessment, but the maritime agency confirmed that at least one vessel continued its journey.
Iran's Role and Response
Iranian state television suggested that the attack on the LNG tanker was a response to its disregard for warnings, although there was no official confirmation from Iranian authorities regarding the assaults. A spokesperson for the Qatari foreign ministry condemned the targeting of the Qatari tanker, Al Rekayyat, labeling it an “unacceptable attack” on international navigation and global energy security.
