If you're traveling to Europe this summer, prepare for potential delays caused by the EU's new border control system. Starting in July 2026, UK travelers must register fingerprints and a photo as part of the Entry/Exit System (EES), leading to longer queues at airports. Missed flights due to these delays can result in significant extra costs.
Arrive Early to Beat the Crowds
To avoid missing flights, experts recommend arriving at European airports at least three hours before departure. This advice comes from the UK boss of budget airline Wizz Air, who emphasized the importance of allowing extra time for the EES registration. Airlines like Jet2 and Ryanair echo this sentiment, although Eurostar suggests arriving at the time specified on your ticket, which already factors in EES procedures.
At the Port of Dover, however, technology issues have hindered the EES implementation, prompting advice to arrive no more than two hours before ferry departures. Arriving too early could lead to unnecessary queues, so it’s crucial to check with your airline or ferry service ahead of time.
Sign Up for Alerts from Travel Providers
Staying informed about waiting times and changes is vital. Airlines and travel providers typically send alerts regarding significant delays. The Civil Aviation Authority advises passengers to check directly with their airline for updates before heading to the airport to ensure adequate time for security checks and reaching departure gates.
