Syrian authorities announced on Thursday that they have arrested a cell affiliated with ISIS responsible for the recent bombings in Damascus. The arrests followed two explosions on July 7, which killed one person and injured 36 during a visit by French President Emmanuel Macron.
Details of the Bombings in Damascus
On July 7, two explosions occurred near the Ministry of Tourism in Damascus, coinciding with Macron's visit. The bombings marked a significant security breach, as the city had been under tight security measures. A previous bombing at a cafe on June 30 resulted in 10 fatalities and 21 injuries.
According to Ahmad Dalati, head of interior security for the Damascus region, preliminary investigations confirmed that the cell involved in these attacks was linked to the IS group. The Minister of Interior, Anas Khattab, stated, “The cell responsible for the terrorist bombings that targeted Damascus two days ago is now in our custody.”
Arrest Operations and Security Measures
The suspects were apprehended during coordinated raids across four neighborhoods in Damascus and its surrounding areas. Khattab indicated that the authorities would disclose the identities of the cell members and their connections once investigations concluded.
