Switzerland's Breel Embolo faced a controversial second yellow card for simulation during the World Cup quarter-final against Argentina on Saturday, leading to significant criticism of the VAR system. The incident unfolded at Kansas City Stadium, resulting in a dramatic shift in the match's dynamics.
Controversial VAR Decision Leads to Embolo's Ejection
The pivotal moment occurred when Argentina's midfielder Leandro Paredes challenged Embolo, resulting in the Portuguese referee João Pinheiro initially issuing a yellow card to Paredes. However, after a VAR review, the decision was overturned, and Embolo was penalized for simulation, receiving his second yellow card and thus being sent off.
“It’s completely not understandable,” said Switzerland's head coach, Murat Yakin, expressing his frustration with the ruling. The decision left Embolo in tears and reduced Switzerland to ten men for the remainder of the match, which ultimately ended in a 2-1 defeat for the Swiss.
Reactions from Swiss Players and Coaches
Switzerland midfielder Remo Freuler echoed Yakin's sentiments, stating, “It’s just a disaster. I don’t know what the referee is doing here.” The emotional toll on Embolo was evident as he had to be escorted from the field, visibly shaken by the decision.
