The Swiss Institute in New York City is set to open its new permanent home at 250 Bowery in Spring 2024. This significant move comes after four decades of the organization operating without a dedicated space. The new location, situated across from the renovated New Museum, will feature an inaugural exhibition titled The Environment, inspired by filmmaker Bud Wirtschafter's participatory project from the 1960s.
Milestone for the Swiss Institute
This relocation marks a historic moment for the Swiss Institute, which will now own its premises for the first time. The architectural firm Johnston Marklee has been commissioned to renovate the space, aiming to create a vibrant hub for contemporary art.
According to the institute's leadership, the new venue will allow for expanded programming and community engagement, fostering a deeper connection with the local art scene. The forthcoming exhibition is expected to explore themes of environmental consciousness, reflecting on the evolving relationship between art and ecology.
