Hong Myung-bo resigned as South Korea's head coach on Sunday, following the team's disappointing exit from the World Cup. The resignation came a day after South Korea finished third in Group A, with only three points from three matches. This exit was compounded by criticism from the country's president, Lee, who labeled the team's performance as a failure.
President Lee's Condemnation
President Lee expressed his disappointment over the team's performance, stating that he was embarrassed by the early exit. He emphasized the need for accountability, referring to the coaching staff as "incompetent people." This harsh criticism likely influenced Hong's decision to step down.
In the group stage, South Korea faced strong competition from co-hosts Mexico, South Africa, and Czechia. Despite hopes of advancing, the team managed only one victory, against Czechia, and lost crucial matches against South Africa and Mexico.
