Sony has announced that it will cease releasing new PlayStation games on physical discs by January 2028. This shift, driven by changing consumer preferences, will mean that all new titles will be available exclusively through the PlayStation Store or via download codes from retailers. This decision follows the upcoming digital-only release of Grand Theft Auto VI, which has sparked significant debate among gamers.
Transition to Digital-Only Games
On Wednesday, Sony confirmed that after January 2028, gamers will no longer have the option to purchase PlayStation games on discs. Instead, all new releases will be available in digital formats. According to the company, this move reflects a broader trend as consumer demand for digital media continues to grow.
“This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs,” the company stated in its official blog. Since the launch of the PlayStation 5 in 2020, which included a disc-less version, the company has been gradually moving towards digital sales.
Impact on Retailers and Gamers
The announcement has raised concerns about the future of specialist game retailers, as the shift to digital sales is expected to negatively impact their businesses. Piers Harding-Rolls from Ampere Analysis noted that the purchasing trends among gamers have changed dramatically over the years. In 2013, digital game sales accounted for only 13% of total sales, but this figure is projected to rise to nearly 80% by 2025.
