The Sizewell B nuclear power plant, located near Leiston in Suffolk, will continue to operate for an additional 20 years after an agreement was reached between its owner EDF and the UK government. This extension was announced on July 9, 2026, allowing the plant to function until 2055, rather than the previously scheduled closure in 2035.
Impact of the Sizewell B Extension
The extension of Sizewell B is expected to safeguard hundreds of jobs, with Robert Gunn, the station director, stating that the deal ensures job security for existing employees and opportunities for young people in Suffolk. EDF plans to invest approximately £800 million into the plant, which employs around 620 staff and over 300 contractors.
Sizewell B is the only pressurized water reactor in the UK, supplying energy to more than two million homes and contributing about 3% of the country's energy needs. According to EDF, the extension will generate sufficient electricity to meet the demands of every home in East Anglia for nearly 45 years.
Government and Regulatory Support
The UK government has welcomed the extension, describing it as “good news” for the energy sector. Lord Patrick Vallance, the minister for science and innovation, emphasized that extending the life of existing nuclear plants is a common practice that provides more clean electricity for the future. He noted that this extension represents power for an additional two and a half million homes and the retention of approximately 900 jobs.
