Severe weather has disrupted the United States’ 250th anniversary celebrations, particularly in Washington, DC, on July 4, 2026. A thunderstorm delayed President Donald Trump’s speech by nearly two hours during the festivities that drew thousands of attendees. Trump described the milestone as "one of the most joyous and glorious" moments in the nation's history.
Weather Disruptions Across Major Cities
In New York City, authorities moved a large fireworks display forward due to impending storms, allowing thousands to enjoy the show without interruption. In contrast, severe weather led to the cancellation of celebrations in cities like Hartford, Connecticut, and Harrisburg and Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Boston's spectators were temporarily evacuated due to weather concerns but were able to resume watching the fireworks later.
Additionally, Pittsburgh adjusted its fireworks schedule to accommodate the shifting weather patterns. In Washington, DC, attendees were evacuated to nearby museums and government buildings before returning to the open field near the Washington Monument. The event saw record-breaking temperatures of 102 degrees Fahrenheit (39 degrees Celsius), which also led to the cancellation of several parades.
Trump's Address and Political Undertones
During his address, Trump honored veterans, including World War II soldiers, and emphasized US military strength, claiming that the US had "wiped out" Iran’s military. He also advocated for the SAVE America Act, which aims to enforce voter ID and proof of citizenship requirements, while continuing his criticisms of the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, likening it to a "cancer" that must be "cut out."
