Sepideh Moafi received her first Emmy nomination for her portrayal of Dr. Baran Al-Hashimi in HBO's 'The Pitt,' announced on Wednesday. This achievement marks a significant moment in television history, as Moafi is recognized as the first Iranian woman and the first woman from the Middle East nominated in the supporting actress in a drama series category.

In 'The Pitt,' Moafi plays a strong-willed doctor who takes charge of the emergency room, navigating challenges including her character's seizure disorder and cultural background. Moafi expressed her gratitude for the recognition, stating, “I can’t imagine a more ideal world, show, character to have this sort of recognition with.” Her character resonates with many viewers, particularly those who identify with her experiences of chronic illness and cultural heritage.
Moafi highlighted the importance of representation in media, saying, “It’s just like so many different parts of a human experience are captured through this one character.” Her portrayal aims to inspire and empower individuals from diverse backgrounds, especially women in medicine.
Personal Journey and Humanitarian Work
Born in a refugee camp in Germany after her parents fled Iran, Moafi's real-life experiences shaped her understanding of her character’s humanitarian background. Dr. Al-Hashimi’s storyline includes working with Doctors Without Borders in Kabul, where she confronts trauma from witnessing violence. Moafi stated, “I think it’s an underrepresented community, and especially in this moment where humanitarian aid work and workers have come under attack.”
