Screen Australia released new data on July 9, 2026, revealing that marketplace financing only covers a fraction of production budgets. The analysis examined 197 narrative production applications submitted between January 2023 and October 2025, highlighting significant funding gaps for film and television projects.
Marketplace Contributions to Production Budgets
The report indicates that marketplace contributions are a consistent element in financing plans but are rarely adequate to fully fund a project. This analysis included 119 feature film applications, 59 for adult television dramas, and 19 for children's television dramas, compiled by the agency's Market & Audience team.
Producers can use this data to set realistic expectations regarding distribution advances, minimum guarantees, presales, and gap financing. Understanding these financial dynamics is crucial for navigating the increasingly competitive landscape of content production.
Insights from the Analysis
The findings underscore the need for producers to seek additional funding sources beyond marketplace contributions. The reliance on these contributions alone could jeopardize the successful completion of many projects.
