Several schools in England are planning to open later on Monday morning following England's World Cup match against Mexico, which starts at 01:00 BST. Schools in London, Salford, the Midlands, and County Durham aim to ease parental pressure by delaying openings until around 10:00. This decision aligns with England manager Thomas Tuchel's call for flexibility to allow families to enjoy the match.
Late School Openings for World Cup Matches
Schools such as Hill Avenue Academy in Wolverhampton are adjusting their schedules, with students starting an hour-and-a-half later than usual. Headteacher Daniel Steventon emphasized the importance of allowing children to passionately support their country during the World Cup, stating, "Why wouldn’t we want our children to be passionate about supporting their country during the World Cup?" This approach has garnered positive feedback from parents.
Kelly Wall, a parent of two, expressed her appreciation for the late openings, saying, "We’ve been able to sit and watch it together as a family." She mentioned that the flexibility helps reduce stress on school mornings, especially after late-night matches.
Mixed Reactions from Parents and Schools
While many parents support the late openings, some have voiced their concerns on social media. One parent argued that children should be ready for school the next morning, citing that they managed fine after being awakened by thunderstorms. Despite differing opinions, schools like Castle Hill Primary School in Basingstoke have also opted for later starts after evening matches.
