Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni emphasized the competitive nature of the 2026 World Cup during a press conference on Monday, stating, "I think this World Cup is proving to be difficult for everyone. There isn't one truly dominant team." Scaloni's remarks come ahead of Argentina's round of 16 match against Egypt on Tuesday in Atlanta.
Argentina's Journey to the Round of 16
Argentina qualified for the knockout stage after a thrilling 3-2 victory over Cape Verde in extra time, thanks to a dramatic own goal in the 111th minute. Previously, La Albiceleste topped Group J by winning all three of their group stage matches against Algeria, Austria, and Jordan.
Scaloni noted that the tournament has been challenging for even the strongest teams, as they have struggled against lower-ranked opponents. He mentioned that France appeared strong but faced difficulties against Paraguay, and Spain did not maintain their form.
Messi's Fitness and Team Preparedness
Scaloni stated that Lionel Messi is in perfect physical condition to play in his 30th World Cup match, extending his all-time appearances record. "Leo is fine. He didn't report any issues, despite playing 120 minutes the other day at the age of 39," Scaloni said.
