The Saudi-led coalition supporting Yemen’s internationally recognized government announced on Saturday its commitment to respond with “unprecedented determination and force” to any threats posed by the Houthi movement. This declaration came after recent provocations from the Houthis, including the arrival of an Iranian civilian flight in Sanaa, Yemen’s capital, which the coalition views as a violation of sovereignty.
Coalition's Stance on Houthi Aggression
In a statement, coalition spokesperson Major-General Turki al-Maliki dismissed the Houthi threats as attempts to distract from the group's actions against Yemeni citizens. He accused the Iran-aligned Houthis of trying to shift the blame for the economic hardships they have caused within Yemen. Al-Maliki stated, “The claims they made are an extension of escalations and hostile behavior demonstrated by the Houthi Militia and their attempts to undermine regional and international security.”
The coalition’s firm response is aimed at protecting Saudi Arabia's national interests and maintaining the sovereignty of Yemen. Al-Maliki emphasized that any act targeting the Kingdom or its assets would be met with decisive military action.
Houthi Threats and Military Posturing
On Friday, Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree issued a statement threatening a “comprehensive” response aimed at Saudi airports and vital interests both on land and at sea. He claimed that his forces had deployed air defense missiles to prevent Saudi warplanes from interfering with an Iranian civilian aircraft landing at Sanaa International Airport. This flight was notable for being the first Iranian civilian aircraft to land in Sanaa in nearly a decade, carrying over 200 patients and a Houthi delegation.
