Sam Curran has expressed his desire to take over the role left by Ben Stokes following Stokes' unexpected retirement from Test cricket. Speaking to BBC Sport on July 3, 2026, Curran emphasized that he will not pressure himself as he aims for a return to the Test team, which is preparing for a series against Pakistan in August.
Curran's Competitive Spirit and Readiness
Curran, who last played in a Test match in 2021, has primarily participated in white-ball formats since then. The 28-year-old all-rounder stated, "Yeah, of course. But it’s one of those things where I just want to try to perform my best… playing for England is amazing and I’m a competitive guy." He is focused on contributing positively to the team when the opportunity arises.
With Stokes' absence highlighted during the second Test against New Zealand, England had to adjust their lineup, opting for an extra specialist batter instead of a spinner, resulting in four frontline seamers. Curran could provide a balanced option as a seam-bowling all-rounder, a role crucial for the upcoming series.
England's Search for a Replacement
The England team is now faced with the challenge of finding a suitable replacement for Stokes. Curran noted the buzz surrounding the decision and acknowledged the pressure that comes with it. He remarked, "There’s no doubt, with Ben Stokes retiring there will be hype around it… my main thing is to try to contribute and win games for England."
