Roberto Martinez confirmed his departure as the coach of Portugal following a 1-0 defeat to Spain in the FIFA World Cup round of 16 on Monday. Martinez, who took charge in 2023, stated that the loss was not a failure but rather a culmination of a challenging cycle for the national team.
Martinez Reflects on His Tenure
In a post-match news conference, Martinez expressed pride in his time with the national team, stating, "Yes, this is my last game with the national team. I'm proud. I've had 45 games, and I felt welcomed in Portugal, and loved. It's a memory I'll take with me always." He acknowledged the difficulties of consistently performing at high levels in international tournaments.
Martinez, who previously managed Belgium, Everton, Wigan, and Swansea, noted, "It was a pleasure, a source of pride, and responsibility. It's hard, but it's the end of a cycle and in the context, it makes absolute sense." Despite the elimination, he emphasized the talent within the squad, highlighting players like Vitinha, João Neves, and Bruno Fernandes.
Understanding the Loss Against Spain
Portugal's defeat was marked by a late goal from substitute Mikel Merino in the 91st minute, which sent Spain into the quarterfinals. Martinez defended his team's performance, stating, "We didn't fail. We lost a game, against a team that's one of the favorites. We showed incredible individual talent. Winning or losing is about details in the big games, with big teams."
