On April 17th, a tornado struck Rivian's electric vehicle factory in Normal, Illinois, causing substantial damage just as the company prepared to launch its crucial R2 model. The storm transformed from a supercell into a squall line of thunderstorms, leading to chaos at the facility.
Tornado Damage at Rivian's Facility
Rivian's vice president of manufacturing, Bobby Dean Parker, received alarming news while at home. A call informed him, “Hey, it’s not good.” He rushed to the factory to find extensive damage, including a giant hole in the roof and flooding from the sprinkler system.
CEO RJ Scaringe, attending an event in Southern California, was also alerted to the destruction. Initial uncertainty about injuries and damage quickly turned to shock upon viewing video footage of the wreckage.
The Impact on Rivian's R2 Launch
The tornado hit at a critical time for Rivian, jeopardizing the production of the R2, a more affordable electric vehicle. The damage occurred in the very section of the factory set for the R2's assembly.
