Former international striker Rade Bogdanovic has faced significant backlash after making a racist slur regarding black players while serving as a TV pundit during the World Cup. The incident occurred on June 21 during a broadcast of Belgium's match against Iran, where Bogdanovic analyzed Nathan Ngoy's red card.
Details of the Controversial Statement
During the match, Bogdanovic commented on Ngoy's sending-off after he tackled Mehdi Taremi, stating, “I have always said those players - and I’m really not racist - but black players lack the concentration to last more than 60 to 80 minutes.” His remarks were immediately challenged by the show's host, but he insisted, “the majority lack concentration.”
This statement sparked outrage on social media, prompting many to condemn his views as outdated and discriminatory. Despite the backlash, Bogdanovic continued to be featured in RTS's coverage of the tournament.
Responses from RTS and Bogdanovic
Both Bogdanovic and the Serbian public broadcaster RTS issued apologies following the incident. Bogdanovic expressed regret in a statement to Reuters, saying, “I sincerely apologise for my statement regarding black football players.” RTS clarified that he was not a direct employee but had been engaged as an expert commentator for the tournament's duration.
