QuEra, a quantum computing startup, unveiled its ambitious roadmap on Wednesday, promising to develop a quantum computer with over 10,000 individual qubits by 2029. This announcement follows Amazon's recent declaration about hosting a useful quantum computer from QuEra, expected to be operational by 2028.
Current State of QuEra's Quantum Technology
At present, QuEra operates a quantum system with 260 qubits, which suffers from a relatively high error rate. This performance level is adequate for testing some error correction codes but falls short for practical applications requiring logical qubits. Yuval Borger, QuEra's representative, stated, "The company made a strategic decision not to sell NISQ [noisy intermediate scale quantum] systems anymore."
The decision to halt the sale of current systems highlights the company's focus on developing a more powerful machine. QuEra's existing models have similar capabilities with around 250 hardware qubits, which limits their application in real-world scenarios.
