A Qatari LNG tanker caught fire after being struck by a projectile near the Strait of Hormuz on July 7, 2026. This incident comes amid escalating tensions following Iranian attacks on maritime vessels, prompting the White House to revoke an oil sales license granted to Iran.
Details of the Attack on the Qatari Tanker
The tanker, named Al Rekayyat, was attacked while attempting to transit southward towards the Gulf of Oman. According to the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), the projectile hit the port side of the vessel. Fortunately, there were no reported casualties or environmental damage, but authorities are currently investigating the incident.
The attack has raised the threat level for vessels in the region to “severe,” as stated by the US Navy-led Joint Maritime Information Center (JMIC). This marks the first time the threat has been classified at this level since June 15, 2026.
Impact on International Relations and Oil Markets
The recent Iranian attacks have disrupted a fragile détente between the United States and Iran, which had recently agreed to reopen the crucial waterway after a three-month war that significantly affected energy prices. In response to the attacks, the US warned that Iran's actions are “wholly unacceptable” and will lead to consequences.
