Portugal is preparing for an extreme heat wave this July, with temperatures expected to soar to 44°C (111°F) in certain areas. On Thursday, the Lisbon and Setubal regions will be under a red alert for high temperatures, according to the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA). This follows a recent heat wave that has affected much of Europe, setting alarming records across various countries.
High Temperatures Expected Across Portugal
The IPMA forecasts that temperatures could reach up to 44°C in the Leiria and Coimbra regions by Friday. Meanwhile, an orange alert was issued for four inland areas, including Evora, where temperatures are predicted to hit 41°C (106°F). Jose Bonifacio, a local busker, remarked, "Usually we get temperatures like this in August; this year they're happening earlier." The soaring heat has prompted many to seek refuge in shaded areas and cafes throughout historic cities like Evora.
Impact of Climate Change on Weather Patterns
This heat wave is part of a disturbing trend linked to climate change. The World Weather Attribution group stated that the recent heat wave would have been "virtually impossible" in June without climate change. This year's June has already seen record-breaking temperatures in Germany, Poland, and the U.K., among others. France has also reported unprecedented nighttime temperatures, highlighting the widespread impact of extreme weather conditions.
