South African authorities have deployed police units in towns and cities across the country before planned anti-immigration marches scheduled for Tuesday. The government is concerned about a potential repeat of the violent anti-migrant incidents that occurred in 2008, which led to the deaths of 62 people and widespread looting. Security personnel were seen patrolling the central business district in Johannesburg, the nation's economic capital, where many shopkeepers opted to remain closed.
Security Measures in Major Cities
In addition to police presence, assets from the South African National Defence Force were reported to be deployed as a precautionary measure. Local media highlighted the visible police patrols aimed at maintaining order during the demonstrations, which are expected to attract significant public attention.
Authorities are taking no chances, recalling the severe consequences of past anti-immigrant violence. The 2008 attacks resulted in not only loss of life but also extensive property damage, prompting a strong response from law enforcement this time around.
