Police have launched an investigation into a £37,500 donation to Robert Jenrick’s campaign for Conservative Party leadership in 2024. The Metropolitan Police confirmed the inquiry on Wednesday following a referral from the Electoral Commission regarding potential breaches of electoral law.
Details of the Investigation
The inquiry is centered on allegations that the donation could have originated from a foreign entity, a violation of UK electoral regulations. A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police stated: “We have launched an investigation following a referral from the Electoral Commission on Tuesday 6 January concerning donations connected to a political party’s leadership campaign.”
Jenrick, who has since defected to Reform UK, claimed the allegations are “entirely false,” asserting that an establishment is trying to undermine his party's efforts. He emphasized that he had no contact with the police regarding this matter.
Background on the Donations
The Electoral Commission previously investigated claims that the £37,500 donation was linked to a UK-based company, The Spott Fitness. Reports suggest that part of this funding may have been funneled from Gary Klopfenstein, a US businessman, through his company Innovyz USA. This raises significant questions surrounding the legality of such donations.
