Following the United States men's national team (USMNT) exit from the World Cup on Monday, coach Mauricio Pochettino refrained from discussing his future with the team. The U.S. faced a disappointing 4-1 defeat to Belgium in the round of 16, marking their elimination at this stage in four of the last five World Cups.
Pochettino stated, "Now is not a moment to talk about that," during his postgame news conference. He emphasized that the focus should be on assessing the tournament instead. The coach's contract is set to expire after this tournament, and discussions about a potential extension had occurred prior to the World Cup.
USSF's Statement on Pochettino's Future
In response to Pochettino's ambiguous position, the U.S. Soccer Federation (USSF) released a statement highlighting their positive conversations with the coach prior to the World Cup. They noted, "We agreed we would continue those conversations following a chance to rest and reflect post World Cup." The USSF expressed gratitude for Pochettino's contributions and acknowledged the work that remains for the team.
Many anticipated that Pochettino, who previously managed elite clubs such as Tottenham Hotspur and Paris Saint-Germain, might view the U.S. role as temporary. However, he conveyed pride in the progress made during his tenure, stating, "I think we set the principles for the future to be very successful."
