Norway's impressive football resurgence has captured global attention, particularly during their run to the World Cup quarter-finals. On Saturday, they face England in Miami, marking their first appearance in the last eight of a major tournament. According to former player John Arne Riise, this success is attributed not only to star players like Erling Haaland but also to years of strategic development.
Key Players Driving Norway's Success
While Haaland has emerged as the standout star, Norway's squad features a wealth of talent. Martin Odegaard, the Premier League-winning captain, leads the charge alongside promising players such as wingers Antonio Nusa and Oscar Bobb, and Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Ryerson.
Riise, who holds the record for the most caps in Norwegian football history, emphasized the importance of these players' performances. “We've focused on developing players from a young age, giving them the right education and training so they're prepared to perform when they go abroad,” he noted.
The Impact of Strategic Development
A significant factor in Norway's footballing success is the establishment of the Landslagsskolen (National Team School) in 2015. This program allows young talents to train under the guidance of top coaches while still competing at grassroots levels. Players typically join at age 12 and transition to club academies around age 15.
