The family of Nolan Wells, an 18-year-old from Mississippi, is demanding answers regarding the circumstances surrounding his death after a boating trip to Horn Island on July 4, 2026. Wells went missing after the outing with friends, and his body was discovered in the water two days later. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office stated that "no foul play was suspected" but requested the public’s assistance in providing information.
Conflicting Accounts Raise Questions
According to Ben Crump, a civil rights attorney representing the Wells family, there are conflicting witness statements about whether Nolan intended to leave the island with his friends or chose to stay behind. Crump has initiated an independent autopsy, highlighting the family's distrust of local law enforcement's investigation.
“The family has distrust of the Mississippi law enforcement officials giving them a fair investigation where their black son ended up dead after going out on a boat with three young white men,” Crump said during a press conference attended by civil rights leader Al Sharpton and Nolan's parents, Christine and Elmore Wonsley.
Concerns Over Initial Autopsy Findings
Initial autopsy results have not been released, but the Jackson County coroner confirmed the body was identified as Wells through dental records. The family expressed discomfort with the initial suggestion that Nolan accidentally drowned, especially since he was known to be a strong swimmer.
