Noah Wyle, known for his role in the hit series ER, revealed that he missed out on significant film roles, including parts in Saving Private Ryan and Good Night, and Good Luck, because he "couldn’t get out" of filming ER. During a recent interview on the Still Here Hollywood podcast, Wyle shared insights into his career choices.
Wyle's Career and Missed Opportunities
Wyle starred in ER for 11 seasons from 1994 to 2005, and he later returned for several episodes in seasons 12 and 15. He mentioned, "Yeah, tons. Happens all the time," when discussing missed opportunities in his career. He was offered significant roles, including the part of Private Ryan in Saving Private Ryan, but his commitment to ER made it impossible for him to accept.
The critically acclaimed Saving Private Ryan, directed by Steven Spielberg, was released in 1998 and won five Academy Awards. Similarly, Good Night, and Good Luck, directed by George Clooney, who also starred in ER, received six Oscar nominations after its release in 2005.
Reflections on Missed Roles
Despite the missed opportunities, Wyle expressed no regrets about not taking those roles. He praised the actors who ultimately filled those parts, stating, "I almost am glad that I didn’t do them, because, you know, those guys made those parts." He specifically mentioned Matt Damon, who portrayed Private Ryan, and Jeremy Davies, who played Upham, noting their exceptional performances.
