Nigeria's military announced on Friday that it successfully freed all 44 pupils and teachers who were kidnapped two months ago from schools in Oyo State. The operation, which involved various security agencies, aimed to dismantle the captors' network and ensure the safe return of the victims.
Details of the Rescue Operation
The abduction occurred on May 15, when gunmen targeted three schools in the district of Osiire: Baptist Nursery and Primary School, LA Primary School, and Community Grammar School. According to army spokesman Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, the rescue involved a month-long operation that led to the arrest of several suspects, although some remain at large.
As part of the operation, the military collaborated with local vigilante groups and intelligence agencies to identify the criminals and their support network, which included informants operating in the Old Oyo National Park forest.
Community Reaction to the Kidnapping
The local teachers' union expressed relief at the successful rescue, yet families of the victims described the experience as harrowing. Prof. Wole Alamu, whose wife is the headteacher of Community Grammar School, shared his gratitude for the safe return of the hostages, stating, "It was a harrowing experience... but we thank God that it ended well."
