On Friday, former chief economic adviser Nicholas Stern called on Andy Burnham to appoint Ed Miliband as chancellor, emphasizing Miliband's vision and experience to revive the UK economy. Stern, a professor at the London School of Economics and a significant figure in the Treasury during Gordon Brown's administration, believes Miliband is the best candidate to lead the government's £1.4 trillion annual spending.
Support for Ed Miliband's Chancellor Candidacy
Stern joined a growing list of senior academics and officials endorsing Miliband for the chancellor position. He stated, "I think of him as competent and strategic. I would also say bold... that we have to have a clear direction showing where investments need to occur." Stern highlighted the necessity of increasing spending by two or three percentage points of national income to bolster investments in clean, efficient infrastructure, particularly in energy, cities, and transport.
With a focus on the future, Stern mentioned that the investment in modern infrastructure is crucial for economic growth and creating an environment conducive to private capital. He emphasized that the UK must adapt to the changing economic landscape, stating, "Investing in North Sea oil is not a strategy for the technologies of the 21st century."
Climate Policy and Economic Strategy
Stern also praised Miliband's moratorium on additional drilling licenses in the North Sea, asserting that it prevents the UK from being trapped in outdated industries. He expressed concern about the potential consequences of the UK appearing inconsistent on oil drilling, noting that it could undermine the country’s credibility in global climate discussions.
