On Friday, the NHS issued new guidance recommending that up to 4 million women with irregular periods be screened for polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS). This condition, previously known as polycystic ovarian syndrome, is underdiagnosed and inconsistently treated, according to Nice.
Understanding Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome
PMOS is estimated to impact up to 13% of women of reproductive age, based on data from the World Health Organization. The condition can lead to a range of health issues, including infertility and metabolic disorders.
Despite its prevalence, many women remain unaware of their condition due to lack of proper diagnosis and treatment. The NHS guidance aims to improve awareness and encourage healthcare providers to take a proactive approach in identifying and managing PMOS.
