Rapid endometriosis tests will soon be available on the NHS in England and Wales, marking a significant advancement in the diagnosis of this painful condition. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) approved two innovative tests, EndoSure and Endotest, which aim to reduce the lengthy diagnosis time for millions of women.
Transformative Endometriosis Testing
Endometriosis affects approximately 1 in 10 women of reproductive age, with symptoms including severe pain during menstruation, bowel movements, and sexual intercourse. Traditionally, diagnosing endometriosis has been a lengthy process, often taking up to a decade. NICE's approval of these tests is expected to significantly expedite the diagnosis process.
Dr. Anastasia Chalkidou, NICE's healthtech programme director, noted that the average diagnosis time in the UK is currently nine years and four months, with women from ethnically diverse communities waiting even longer. The introduction of these rapid tests aims to alleviate the burden of prolonged suffering and improve health outcomes.
Details of the New Tests
The Endotest involves women providing a saliva sample that is analyzed for microRNAs, which can indicate the presence of endometriosis. Results are communicated to healthcare professionals within a short timeframe. The EndoSure test, on the other hand, measures electrical signals in the gut using sensor pads on the abdomen, providing results in just 45 minutes.
