The state of New York filed a lawsuit on Thursday against five companies over the use of 'forever chemicals', a group of toxic substances known for their persistence in the environment. Attorney General Letitia James alleges that these firms concealed information about the dangers posed by these chemicals, which have been widely utilized in various consumer products.
Understanding 'Forever Chemicals'
'Forever chemicals' refer to a class of substances known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), which are resistant to environmental degradation. These chemicals have been linked to serious health issues, including cancer and liver damage. Their prevalence in everyday products, such as non-stick cookware and water-repellent fabrics, raises significant public health concerns.
In her announcement, Letitia James emphasized the importance of holding companies accountable for their actions. She stated, "These companies knew about the harmful effects of these chemicals but chose to hide this information from the public. We will not allow corporate greed to jeopardize the health of New Yorkers."
The Companies Involved in the Lawsuit
The lawsuit names five companies, including major manufacturers known for their extensive use of PFAS in products. These firms are accused of failing to disclose the risks associated with their products, potentially endangering consumers.
